Amsterdam Twestival team would like to thank all the speakers, sponsors, artists/acts and charities who helped us deliver the offline event at Maarssen and the fundraising party last week. Our work continues as we tally up the total amount raised, which we hope to announce at the end of the month.

As you know, one of our goals was to not only raise funds but educate the charities on the use of social media for social good. The positive feedback received from participants clearly indicates that we achieved our goal! Anyone who signed up for the event but were unable to make it, can check out the recorded speeches and discussions online.

When Twestival launched in Amsterdam earlier this year, being our first event, we played it relatively safe and delivered a more formal fundraising event. The community came right back at us, demanding a party next time and not another networking event. So this time around, every effort went into organising a fundraising party by the community for the community.

We were fortunate to secure the Odeon nightclub in the heart of Amsterdam, the perfect place to host a party with local and international acts and artists, all passionate about supporting Twestival Amsterdam to raise funds for our 6 charities. Our vision was a one-off party, diverse in its content and audience offering something different to party-goers in Amsterdam.

But as we closed the doors on the second Twestival Amsterdam, we couldn’t ignore the fact that ticket purchases and attendance numbers were disappointingly low. Of course, this means we are unlikely to exceed our fundraising total from February and left us pondering the question: does social media really draw crowds, create buzz, engage people compared to traditional media forms? Answers on the back of a postcard with a licked stamp, please.

Anyhow, in the words of Inner City “WE don’t really need a crowd to have a party. Just a funky beat and YOU to get it started, Ohh Ohh We’ll dance the night away…” If you made it to the Odeon last Thursday, we hope YOU had Big Fun and a sincere thank YOU for your support.

With exactly 4-hours to go before the Odeon throws open its doors to welcome Twestival Amsterdam, those not yet in possession of tickets to the most tweeted about event on the social (media) calendar will be pleased to know, you can now buy your tickets on-the-door for the online price of 15Euros each! Please note we can only accept cash in the exact amount on the door.

Twestival Local: Amsterdam although organised within a short time frame and driven through social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook and Hyves has inspired people from all backgrounds, interests, online and offline to get involved, whether through sponsorship, volunteering or purchasing a ticket.

Although our focus is to raise as much money as possible for our 6 charities, at the same time we want everyone to experience a fundraising party like no other. Our sponsors, whether supporting the offline event today and/or fundraising event this evening are giving their time, money and energy to make Twestival Local: Amsterdam happen. This evening at the Odeon, the community, sponsors and charities will meet side-by-side to greet, give, eat, drink and dance all in the name of social media for social good.

Free for charities and NGOs, the offline event in Maarsen is currently under-way. Although you’ve missed this morning’s session, there is still time to catch three more leading speakers including

Erwin Blom who will close the event today. Erwin Blom is experienced in print, radio, digital television, mobile, internet en crossmedia strategies. In 2008, he started The Crowds - a Social Media Hub in partnership with Wessel de Valk and Idse de Pree, focused on social media.

After lunch, we have Renato Valdés Olmos, the founder of my name is e which started as a graduation project in 2007 and grew into a service to connect users and their online lives to the real world followed by Timan Rebel from mobypicture the online platform to share photos, text, audio and videos with friends across the social sites: facebook, twitter, flickr, vimeo, and more.

Final Countdown - newest additions to Twestival line up

Our entertainment line-up for the Amsterdam Twestival is growing by the hour! We have dance performances, video displays, laser shows, poetry and much, much, more.

In addition to the DJ and artist line-up announced earlier today, we are now able to reveal the latest additions, all volunteering their time and talent to make Amsterdam Twestival a success:

In addition to UK’s Benji Boko, we have legendary UK DJ Graeme Park, with a career spanning over 20 years, 8 of them spent in residence at the Hacienda, Manchester during its glory days; Graeme has rightfully earned the reputation as the pioneer of house music and continues to be at the forefront of the dance scene today.

Female vocalist and flutist Farah Day, with a background in jazz-, classical- and world music has continuously mesmerized her audiences with her personal style, a mix of jazz-dance, funky-house, jazzy lounge and soulful-trance.

Active in the international DJ scene, Dutch DJ Lady Ace has played with the likes of Tiesto, Terry Toner and Ben Cullum to name just a few! Renowned for her variety of music styles: dance sounds, funky grooves and jazzy lounge, she’s played the Netherland’s festival scene including Wooferland and Awakenings and entertained audiences in Brazil, Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Born in Israel, Oded Nir’s music stems from the early 90’s. After years of studio and stage performance as a bass player Oded moved exclusively into producing and composing music. He is no stranger to the International music scene, performing at the Cannes Midem festival and closer to home, recently at the Amsterdam Dance Event.

Oops! Onderschat nooit de kracht van mond tot mond reclame

Op dit moment werken we met 10 vrijwilligers die hun tijd verdelen tussen Twestival en hun dagelijkse werk en 2 full-time vrijwilligers. Allemaal werken ze hard aan dit grote social media evenement dat plaatsvindt in Nederland en 300 andere steden over de hele wereld.

Aan het begin van dit project ontdekte we dat de Nederlandse non-profit organisaties social media nog niet inzet om in contact te komen met sponsors, donateuren en ambassadeurs. Bij al deze stichtingen/ondernemingen ontdekte we wel individuen die gebruik maken van de diverse social media tools maar nooit als organisatie. Al de organisatie die we gesproken hebben waren wel geïnteresseerd en wilden het wel proberen, maar hebben er nog geen goed beeld bij hoe dat zou moeten en ervaren toch een beetje angst bij om ermee te beginnen. Het zou dan ook niet eerlijk zijn ze in het diepe te gooien en ze te betrekken op de wijze zoals dat in de andere landen gebeurt.

We hebben van het hoofdkantoor goedkeuring gekregen om hierin te experimenteren en het twestival in Nederland wat aan te passen zodat het bij de Nederlandse cultuur past, we blijken dan toch echt iets anders te zijn dan de rest. We bedachten om niet alleen geld in te zamelen voor de organisaties, maar ze ook te helpen bij hun eerste stappen in het digitale tijdperk, ze de weg te wijzen zodat zij straks zelf de communities op kunnen zetten en voor zich te laten werken.

Het eerste gedeelte van het evenement vindt overdag plaats op 10 september in Maarssen, en is alleen toegankelijk voor alle non-profit en goede doelen organisaties. Het tweede deel van het evenement is voor iedereen toegankelijk die geïnteresseerd is in social media en goede doelen en zal plaatsvinden vanaf 19.00 in Odeon. Dit evenement, dag en avond, is volledig georganiseerd door en met de community waarbij we gebruik hebben gemaakt van Twitter, Facebook, Instand Message, persoonlijke en zakelijke netwerken van iedereen die betrokken is. Tot ons eerste Persbericht is al het werk volledig gedaan via de beschikbare technologieën (computers en blackberry’s), helaas is gedurende de organisatie van het evenement wat verwarring ontstaan – een consequentie van een snel netwerk van vrienden en vrienden van vrienden die razendsnel alle berichten doorstuurden en helpen Amsterdam Twestival op de kaart te zetten.

Al gaande leren we op dit nieuwe pad van het opzetten van een evenement zoals Amsterdam Twestival waarbij we de geavanceerde en nieuwe methodes binnen de social media gebruiken, we leren terwijl we bezig zijn. Het is daarin onvermijdelijk dat we fouten maken en belangrijker is dat we ervan leren en deze lessen door kunnen geven aan de non-profit organisaties bij het offline evenement in Maarssen.

Ik noemde eerder dat berichten verwarring hebben opgeleverd. In ons recente pers bericht hebben we je geïnformeerd dat de legendarische godfather van de Amsterdamse muziek scene, DJ Dimitri (Rutger Docter) zou komen draaien op Amsterdam Twestival. Dat bericht is incorrect, in feite hebben we een andere DJ Dimitri en niet alleen hem, maar ook vele spannende andere acts waar we je later meer over zullen vertellen.

En onthou: Van fouten leer je, en van leren wordt je beter, een professional. Toch?

Pin-up and line-up for Amsterdam Twestival

As you know Amsterdam Twestival is about bringing the twitter community together, to not only raise funds for good causes but network with like-minded people and experience homegrown media, technology and music talent in one evening that’s sure to be, one hell of a party!

We are pleased to see the return of Ancilla Tilla (Wakker Dier’s Ambassador and FHM columnist) as our MC for the evening whilst we welcome a new technology sponsor to Amsterdam Twestival; Sonos who will operate a Multi-Room Music System which besides doing funky techi stuff, will live stream online and on radio from the Odeon’s basement lounge.

In addition, we are fortunate to have a number of Dutch and International DJs and artists providing music for all tastes, whom have all volunteered time out from their busy agendas to get behind the Tweet-Meet-Give message. Many of the acts will be performing sets throughout the night exclusively for Amsterdam Twestival party-goers. A warm welcome to Benji Boko joining us from the UK music scene. A British Music Producer, DJ and Beatboxer, Benji is famed for his upbeat club remixes and funky hip-hop. Earlier this year, Boko rocked the crowds at both the V-Festival and Rockness 2009. To experience the original sound of Benji Boko click here

The popular Amsterdam rock/pop band A Balladeer whose musical career rocketed whilst supporting Keane, Saybia and Beth Hart on tour ,and once winners of the prestigious De Buma Zilveren Harpen will delight the audience with new and old songs including ‘Swim with Sam’ and ‘Fortune Teller‘

With a demanding schedule ahead of them, as they line-up for this year’s travelling festival: Popronde-seizoen and a debut album due out this month, we are fortunate to have Avant La Lettre the 5-piece Indie/Pop band from Amsterdam with musical influences from Radiohead en dEUS join us especially for this special event.

DJ Dimitri, known to his fans as Rockstar DIM BROWSKI works with various artists in different fields. His band K.I.S.S., also known as the Kiss Intergalactic Sound System, is well known for their eccentric live shows and hip-hop afterparties. Dim has a following throughout Amsterdam with return performances at Bitterzoet, De Kring and MiniBar.

We are looking forward to announcing further artists to our line-up throughout today and tomorrow, although we plan to keep some things under wraps, after all, what’s a party without a few surprises!
