OOps!-Never underestimate the power of word of mouth

Currently we have around 10 volunteers balancing their day jobs and 2-fulltime volunteers all working on a huge social media event which will take place in the Netherlands and 300 other cities around the world supporting local charities
We realised early on in this project that Dutch charities weren’t using social media to connect with donors and supporters, they all use this media as individuals but never as an organisation. All the charities that we spoke to wanted to try but were concerned or afraid to touch it. It would have been unfair to poll one charity and throw them into a conversation that they might not have grasped.
We were given the go ahead from Twestival Headquarters to experiment and also, adapt the Netherlands event so it would fit with the Dutch Culture. We came up with the idea of not just giving cash but also educating the charities, providing them with the first steps into the Digital age, enabling them to create their own communities and conversations.
The first of our events on 10th September will be held at Maarsen and is open to NGOs and Charities only. The second of our events, open to everyone and anyone interested in social media for social good will be hosted at the Odeon on 10th September starting 19:00. This event has been created with the whole community behind it, using Twitter, Facebook, Instand Messaging, personal and business networks of everyone involved. Until our recent Press Release all the work had been managed 100% via technology (computers and blackberries!) but during the event organisation messages have become confused - a consequence of the vast networks and friends of friends all helping to bring Amsterdam Twestival together.
We live and learn and are breaking very new territory in organising Amsterdam Twestival whilst utilising the advancing methods in social media - simply learning as we run! It is inevitable mistakes will be made but more importantly that we learn from them, so we can pass on the many lessons to the NGOs at the Maarssen offline event.
I mentioned previously that messages get confused. In our recent press release, we announced that the legendary Godfather of Amsterdam music scene, DJ Dimitri (Rutger Docter) would be coming out of retirement to play Amsterdam Twestival, this statement was incorrect and in fact, we have a different DJ Dimitri to be announced along with other exciting acts later today.
By making mistakes - we learn. By learning we get better - right?
